Stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who co-created the long-running 1990s sitcom Seinfeld, will tour Mumbai in mid-March as part of the Stage42 festival.

Famous for his observational humour and somewhat deadpan delivery, Seinfeld will be performing in Asia for the first time on March 14 and 15.

This is his first show outside the United States after a gap of seven years, according to the event’s organisers.

“He has a huge fan base in India where we’ve been watching him on TV for the last two decades,” says Arjun Ravi, co-founder of NH7 and a director at Only Much Louder (OML).

“Even if someone does not know much about comedy, chances are they have heard of Jerry Seinfeld.” Managed by OML, the event will take place at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel stadium, NSCI, Worli.

“I have always been fascinated by India and its culture. I have great respect for its people and their way of life. It is a great honour for me to be invited to come there and make fun of it in person,” the comedian said in a press release announcing the event.

Seinfeld’s show, which aired from 1989-1998 on the NBC network, was co-written with Larry David. While often referred to as “a show about nothing,” it touched upon several aspects of life in New York interspersed with portions of Seinfeld’s stand-up.

In 2014, Seinfeld topped a list of richest actors in Hollywood released by Singapore-based company, Wealth-X, owing to rewards from re-runs of the popular show. In India, it ran on channels including Star World, Zee Cafe and Comedy Central.

Tickets for the Mumbai event start at Rs 7,500, which, OML’s Ravi says, is “economical given the financials of the whole thing.” The tickets will go on sale from February 13 at www.insider.in.
