Telugu film Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum (KVJ), which was released on 1,000 screens globally on November 30, 2012, has set the cash registers ringing with its two-day gross collection reaching over Rs 10 crore at the box office.

“With overseas market contributing to ticket sales in a big way, we won’t be surprised if the collection crosses the Rs 45-crore mark and move even further this week,” said trade analysts and exhibitors.

According to them, KVJ scored big even in cities like Ahmedabad, where the first show had 105 audience and the second day saw 120 audience in screens with capacities of 146. “Earlier films from Tollywood (as the Telugu film industry is known) could touch only a maximum audience of 60 in these screens,” they said.

Made with a budget of around Rs 20 crore, the film was directed by Krish (Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi). The film is all about BTech Babu (Telugu actor Rana), a reluctant Surabhi theatre actor, who takes on the powerful mining mafia at Bellary in Karnataka.

According to analysts, KVJ’s first day collection in the US alone was more than the first week collection of the last few Tollywood releases. KVJ’s collections across 30 locations in the US on Friday ($83,840) and Saturday ($85,678) totalled $169,518 (approximately Rs 92 lakh).

“The demand for more shows in B and C centres came in as a big surprise for exhibitors. The film’s Andhra Pradesh weekend share alone touched Rs 4.25 crore,” said KVJ producer Rajeev.
