India's north-east is among the least visited parts of the country, which is unfortunate because it is just spectacular. Among the region's many gems, the Kaziranga National Park is a standout.

Home to a huge variety of birds, animals and reptiles, the park will stun you with its swathes of grassland and green forest. The world's densest tiger population is to be found here (they're hard to spot, though!), but the park is most famous for its Asian one-horned rhino population.

About 1,700 of them may not sound like much, but they make up 70 per cent of the entire rhino population on earth! Bird watchers will be delighted too, as there are many species to be peered at through binoculars.

Kaziranga is 220 km from Guwahati via Nagaon. The road is reasonably well-surfaced but a bit narrow. Stay options include Wild Grass (Ph: 0361-2546827, Rs 1,250 onwards with breakfast) and Aranya Lodge (Ph: 03376-262429, Rs 500 onwards).
