Holistic holiday destination Kerala is set to play caddie to the global traveller. The Great India Tour Company (GITC), with support from the Department of Tourism, wants golfers to come tee off at the famed Trivandrum Golf Club, among the oldest golf courses outside Great Britain.
Says E M Najeeb, chairman, GITC, and secretary of the Trivandrum Golf Club, "Plans are afoot to include golf holidays on the itinerary of the traveller on a Kerala trek."
The traveller can look forward to a new 18-hole golf course in Kochi, even as the club's nine-hole course gets into the swing of things.
To promote Kerala as a golfing destination "" the dominant imagery being its backwaters more than golfing greens "" GITC intends using celebrity endorsement.
"We have approached ace cricketer and golfer Kapil Dev to inaugurate golf holidays at the club. He has expressed enthusiasm," adds Najeeb. Other famous golfers may be invited to Kerala too.
After all, "God's own country", as the state is positioned in the traveller's mind, has been a tee-off point for much longer than anyone'd guess.
