Work on Rs 7,500 cr port proj in TN to start next fiscal: Vasan

The work on Rs 7,500 crore outer harbour project at VOC port in Tamil Nadu, which is scheduled for commissioning in 2020, is likely to start in the next fiscal, the government said today.

"The...Project 'Development of Outer Harbour at V O Chidambaranar Port at an estimated cost of Rs 7,500 Crores is all set to takeoff ...On behalf of Ministry of Shipping and Maritime community, Union Minister for Shipping G K Vasan has expressed his appreciation to Finance Minister P Chidambaram," a Shipping Ministry statement said.

The announcement for the project, to be implemented in public-private-partnership mode, was made by Chidambaram in his Budget speech.

"The Outer Harbour would feature 9 berths with a draft of 14 metres and the capacity addition on implementation of the project would be 42 million Tonnes," the statement said.

The project component includes construction of breakwater, dredging & declamation, construction of berths & jetties, establishment of road and railway connectivity and installation of mechanical handling equipment.

The feasibility study for the project has been awarded to I-Maritime Consultancy Private Ltd and the final detailed project report is expected to be received within 4 to 5 months time.

"On getting approval of the government and environmental clearance, the work for the project will be executed in phases.
