State-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) today said it has commissioned a 250 MW coal-based thermal power unit at Sikka in Gujarat.

It has been commissioned at Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd's (GSECL) Sikka Thermal Power Station on Engineering, procurement and Construction basis.

This is the second unit of 250 MW to be commissioned by BHEL at Sikka TPS, located near Jamnagar, one of the major industrial towns in the state.

BHEL had commissioned the first 250 MW unit in March. In addition, two units of 120 MW each, supplied and executed earlier by BHEL, are already in operation.

The sets of this rating class, supplied by BHEL, are considered as workhorses and form the backbone of the Indian power sector.

These sets have been performing much above the national average as well as international benchmarks. BHEL has so far contracted 251 sets of this rating class.

BHEL has had a long association with GSECL and has contributed around 86% of the total installed generating capacity of GSECL.

For GSECL, BHEL is executing another EPC order for setting up an 800 MW supercritical coal-based project at Wanakbori.

BHEL has delivered higher rated units of 600 MW, 660 MW, 700 MW and 800 MW thermal sets with a high degree of indigenisation.

In the current financial year (2015-16), BHEL has already commissioned power plants with a cumulative capacity of 2,730 MW. The power equipment maker said it has practically 2 out of 3 houses being lit by power generated by BHEL sets. It has installed base of over 150,000 MW of power plant equipment.
