Biocon, Asia’s leading biotechnology enterprise, has set up Biocon Academy - a centre of excellence for advanced learning in applied biosciences. The academy, set up for Rs 10 crore, excluding the cost of offering the course, aims to train and develop industry-ready talent for India’s biopharma sector.

The academy, according to Biocon, will offer advanced learning in biosciences that will provide the required proficiency for enhanced career prospects in biotechnology for engineering and science graduates. It will connect industry and academia to maximise the opportunities for aspiring biotechnologists and to address the skill deficit of the sector.

The academy’s flagship programme is in collaboration with the Keck Graduate Institute, California, (KGI). The KGI is an American graduate institution devoted solely to bioscience education and discovery.

While the academy offers post-graduate programmes as well in the United States, they will offer only the certificate programme in India, with the possibility of offering more advanced programmes in future.

According to Biocon, the programme will cost about Rs 6 lakh, with a scholarship of Rs 4.5 lakh being offered by Biocon and help with bank loans for the rest Rs 1.5 lakh. The intake for the course will initially be 25-30 per batch with about four batches being trained per annum.
