The operation was carried out in a designated anchorage area, which has been notified by the Chennai customs.
The port, which has been handling mainly thermal coal for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) at its two dedicated coal berths, is trying to attract various other cargoes through temporary handling facilities.
During the last financial year, 2.2 million tonnes of iron ore was handled through the temporary facility. The STS operation of LPG/POL is another step in this direction for increasing the throughput of the port, said S Velumani, chairman and managing director, Ennore Port Limited.
