"The (successful) bidder will be decided on July 16. Reliance Energy, Bombardier Transportation and Larsen & Toubro Ltd are left in the final round," the source said.

The Reliance Energy has partnered with SNC Lavalin and Reliance Communication to form consortium. Bombardier Transportation has joined hands with GVK and Yeoh Tiong Lay to form its consortium. The L&T consortium includes Infrastructure Development Projects and India Infrastructure Private.

The Mumbai monorail Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project will connect Wadala and Mahalakshmi in central Mumbai in the 25-km pilot project.

The bid winner will design and build the project and also undertake operations and maintenance. The term of the contract will be three years including construction time.

Phase-I of the project envisages a 70-km network with four corridors. Apart from the 25-km Wadala-Mahalakshmi stretch, there would be two independent 10-km lines connecting Wadala to Chembur and Bandra-Kurla Complex.

The fourth is the 25-km corridor between Thane, Kalyan and Bhiwandi.
The monorail aims to connect areas that are not covered by the upcoming Mumbai metro rail project.

Apart from those in the final fray, four consortia that had pre-qualified in January, this year, were those led by Reliance Industries, Essar, IL&FS Transportation Networks and Pioneer Infratech.
