GE sets up CoE for maternal infant care products

GE Healthcare, the $17-billion healthcare and life sciences business of GE, has established a centre of excellence (CoE) in Bangalore for research and development in maternal infant care products.
 
The CoE, which has 30 engineers, is part of the GE Healthcare's Clinical Systems division.
 
GE Healthcare has over 1,200 engineers at its R&D centre in Bangalore, of which 300 are engaged in research and development in clinical systems.
 
As part of its 'in India, for India' programme, GE Healthcare on Monday launched its first maternal infant care product in India, which has been fully designed and developed by its India R&D centre. Lullaby, the blue compact fluorescent lamp, is based on phototherapy and is meant for treating jaundice in newborns.
 
GE Healthcare plans to export the phototherapy system to Europe, Latin America, West Asia and Asia Pacific countries. The company has set a target to sell 1,000 Lullaby units in India in the first year of launching. GE Healthcare has so far launched seven products in India, which are completely designed and developed by its India R&D centre.
 
According to V Raja, president and CEO, GE Healthcare, South Asia, the company is trying to increase its exports from India to corner a revenue of $800 million by 2010.
 
At present, GE Healthcare's India business stands around $475 million and the company aims to reach a turnover of about $500 million in India including the exports this fiscal, Raja added.
 
The maternal infant care products' market in India is estimated to be about $10 million. The company estimates the market to go up significantly looking at the high infant mortality rate in India "" about 54 deaths in every 1,000 babies born.
 
So far, GE Healthcare has invested about $120 million in research and development in the country.
