GTL Infra to pump in $1.8 bn to set up 25,000 towers

Telecom tower firm GTL Infrastructure today said it is planning to roll out 25,000 towers in the country by 2012, entailing an investment of $1.8 billion.     

"We are planning to roll out 25,00 telecom towers by March 2012," GTL Infrastructure Chief Operating Officer Prakash Ranjalkar told reporters here. The total investment would be $1.8 billion, he added.     

The company is currently operational in 19 circles and the tower portfolio of the company consists of 8,366 towers at various stages of completion as on December 31, 2008.     

Most of the new towers that are coming up would be located across semi-urban and rural India, he added.     

GTL Infra builds, owns, operates and maintains passive network infrastructure on shared basis in order to cater to the rapidly growing infrastructure needs of cellular telecom operators.        

The company has nine telecom operators and one WiMAX operator as tenants on its towers.     

The shares of GTL Infrastructure were trading at Rs 29.80, down 0.33 per cent at the BSE.
