Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi today laid the foundation stone of Rs 90-crore first five star hotel by Taj Group – Taj Vivanta, in Guwahati in the presence of host of dignitaries, including Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Sons.
Gogoi said that he was “looking” for a five-star hotel in the state for a “long time”, and especially after Infosys’ Narayan Murthi, in 2006, refused to invest in the state in the absence of any such hotel to host its guests. He said he then got in touch with Ratan Tata and impressed upon him to set up a five-star hotel in the city. The hotel will come up at Khanapra in GS Road, and would be spread over 4.5 acres. The company has been allotted the land on a long-term lease. It will be completed and commissioned within two years .
Speaking at the ceremony, Ratan Tata said, “This morning, we were all struck by tremendous change in the state, the level of accuracy and enhancement in the quality of life. We are all committed to the vision of the chief minister of Assam. I think the hotel will go a long way in fulfilling the goal of economic development of the state and the region.”
The hotel will have 150 rooms and suites and will be built with a design theme inspired by local architecture. The hotel will have a day-long dining restaurant, a Speciality restaurant and a bar, besides recreation facilities like an expensive spa and fitness centre.
