WeWork, the New York-based collaborative workspace or co-working space firm and the ninth most valued start-up in the world, opened its doors with its first community workspace in India, WeWork Galaxy, in Bengaluru.
"WeWork Galaxy would cater to around 2,200 members and provide beautiful workspaces that have a swimming pool and a gym. The company is aiming to reach out to entrepreneurs, freelancers and start-ups across the e-commerce sector for filling up the office space," said the company.
According to the company, Bengaluru was chosen as the first location for its robust ecosystem of startups.
"WeWork is a global company with a local playbook and the reason we chose Bengaluru as our first location is because of its demographic composition, making it the most diverse city, apart from being with the second fastest-growing metropolis in India with a robust startup ecosystem," said Karan Virwani, director at WeWork (India).
The company has major expansion plans and would be setting up shops in other metropolitan cities as well. "For WeWork, 2017 is a year of great expansion in the Asia-Pacific region, and we want to strengthen our communities here as we enter new markets. We'll soon bring WeWork to Mumbai and Delhi as well, and are looking forward to exploring innovative ideas coming out of these communities," said Ole Ruch, managing director, WeWork Asia-Pacific.
In 2016, WeWork had doubled its membership with over 80,000 members utilising the space, community and services that it offers. Companies such as Microsoft, Bacardi and Samsung have used the co-working space offered by the firm. Founded in 2010, WeWork has been adding around 10 to 15 locations every month and has opened 149 workspace units in 45 cities across the world.
