Bangalore-based Kalki Communication Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (Kalkitech), a provider of communication and optimization solutions for the Smart Grid, has acquired California based Applied Systems Engineering (ASE) Inc., for an undisclosed amount.

ASE is a Smart Grid protocol technology leader and a leading manufacturer of protocol test equipment for the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) industry and communication protocol translators and front end processors.

"The Applied Systems Engineering team is world class and has developed market leading Substation Protocol Test Set and more than 100+ Substation and Industrial protocols in an illustrious history of over 30 years. The team shares our passion for delivering high quality communication protocol solutions for the Smart Grid," said Prasanth Gopalakrishnan, CEO of Kalkitech.

The acquisition will help Kalkitech expand its Smart Grid footprint in the US and global market and offer customers an enhanced set of products and solutions for Substation Communications and Distribution Automation.

“ASE has long been committed to developing world class communication products including ASE2000, Bell 202 Modems, “SPT” Protocol Translators, and “SAM” Substation Alarm Annunciators. We are enthused to be part of the Kalkitech family,” said Jack Verson, President of Applied Systems Engineering Inc.

ASE was founded in 1981 by Bill Whittemore, later joined by Jack Verson and Bob Krebsbach.

ASE provided software consulting services for the SCADA Industry until 1989 and started developing the first protocol Test Set COMM/32 in 1989. The supported protocol list continued to grow, to over 100 protocols.

Today ASE is one of the market leaders in protocol test sets for utility protocols with its ASE2000 product. Other products include protocol converters, Substation Alarm Annunciators, Terminal Servers, modems, and Source Code Libraries.
