King Koil, the maker of spring mattresses and accessories, has plans to open 50 company owned showrooms across the country in 2006-07. The company is also planning to set up a manufacturing facility which will be operational by the end of next year.

S Sundar Rajan, director, King Koil Sleep Systems, said on Monday that the company is looking for a site to set up the manufacturing facility.

"We are considering Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for the site and the final decision will be made within two weeks," Sundar Rajan said.

The company is planning to manufacture 300 mattresses per day in addition to the accessories including mattress protectors, linen sets and pillows, he explained.

The expected investment in setting up the manufacturing facility is Rs 25 crore. King Koil made an entry into India last month with a showroom in Mumbai.

Pune is the company's second location and the company will go to Gujarat next with showrooms in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat, Sundar Rajan said. "We plan to make operational 50 showrooms across India in one year, with a stress on West, North and South regions," Sundar Rajan said.

King Koil will spend Rs 50 crore to open to these showrooms, he added. The company is aiming a turnover of Rs 100 crore by the third year of operation in India, Sundar Rajan said, adding that 60 per cent of the sales are expected from the retail segment.

"King Koil is the fifth largest mattress brand in the world and we have on our customer list hotel chains including Meridien, Hilton and Sheraton. We expect this relationship to be extended in India as all of the major hotel chains are present in India and are planning expansion," he said.

According to Sundar Rajan, the Rs 600-crore mattress market in India has a very small portion of spring mattresses, whereas this share is about 80 per cent elsewhere in the world.

"We will make effort at educating the customer as well as the trade - architects, consultants, interior design contractors - about the benefits and cost effectiveness of the product," he said.

King Koil India is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dubai Furniture Manufacturing LLC, which has the licence for manufacturing and marketing King Koil range of products.
