In a sequel to its decision to demolish two check dams on tea plantations partly owned by the Tata Group in the Munnar region, the Kerala government has issued a notice to remove the electric fencing in the disputed area.

The notice was issued to Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Ltd (KDHPL), in which the Tatas have 18 per cent stake. The deadline for compliance is Friday, also the date for demolishing the check dams.

The state government says the dams and fencing are illegal and a breach of the lease agreement with the government. The Tatas have denied any illegal construction.

The revenue department says the electric fencing prohibits movement of area tribals and illegally hinders wildlife movement. A spokesman of KDHPL told Business Standard the fencing is powered with solar energy and the electric power is minimal, to ensure safety of the plantation from wild animals. After getting the notice, the solar power had been cut and the fencing removed within the stipulated time. About the dams, he said the company was examining legal recourse.
