The Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) would construct a cricket stadium and an academy for the sport in Dehradun, announced Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna.

The oil major would construct the cricket complex with an investment of Rs 100 crore, the chief minister said at a function here.

The complex, comprising a stadium and an academy, would be set up in a 23-acres-area at Raipur here, Sports Minister Dinesh Agarwal told Business Standard.

For this purpose, ONGC is likely to form a joint venture with the state government, added Agarwal.

On November 15, he, along with ONGC chairman Sudhir Vasudeva would lay the foundation stone for setting up the cricket stadium at Raipur, said Bahuguna.

“We will be providing land while the investment of Rs 100 crore will come from ONGC for the purpose of cricket stadium and academy,” said Jain. In addition to this, the state government would also construct a sport comlex in the area with an investment of Rs 100-150 crore, Agarwal said.

ONGC sources told Business Standard the company would construct the stadium under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. With Uttarakhand lagging behind in sporting facilities, ONGC’s initiative is likely sports a much-needed push in the hill state.
