State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) today said it has made a significant gas discovery in Tripura but did not give reserves the latest find may contain.

Well AD#30 "located on the northwest flank of Agartala Dome in Agartala licence of Assam-Arakan Basin was drilled to a depth of 3,515 meter. On testing, one of its sand zone flowed gas at the rate of 1,13,400 cubic meter per day," the company said in a press statement here.

The discovery has been already notified to upstream regulator Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH), it said without giving details of the reserves the find may hold.

"The success of this well has opened up the intervening low area between Agartala and Konaban structures and also gives impetus to exploration of more such areas on the flanks of major structures in Tripura fold belt," ONGC said.

Commending on the discovery, ONGC Chairman and Managing Director A K Hazarika said: "This discovery will go a long way as far as our target of 5.5 million cubic meter per day of gas production for fuelling the ONGC Tripura Power Gas Co (OTPC) project is concerned."

In an unrelated development, Dr D Chandrasekharam has joined ONGC board as an independent director. He attended his first board meeting today, the statement said.
