Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Inventec to set up facility in Chennai

The company is planning to lease a manufacturing facility, according to reports

Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Inventec Corp is reportedly planning to set up its factory in Chennai and may begin operations in the second half of 2015.

The company, which is a major supplier to Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi, is planning to utilise the India facility for assembling smartphones and other devices, according to reports.

Inventec Corp chairman Richard Lee reportedly told in Taiwan the company’s board had approved leasing a manufacturing plant in Chennai to meet increasing orders from major clients, and had said the new plant would start operations in the second half of 2015.

The company plans to source components locally from Indian suppliers, a Taiwan local news channel said quoting company’s general manager Huang Kuo-chun. A company report stated India would form a part of its expansion plans.

Emails sent to Inventec seeking confirmation did not elicit response, while the Tamil Nadu government officials confirmed the company was planning to set up facility here.

The move by Inventec comes at a time when Xiaomi recently announced it was planning to start assembling products in India.

According to sources from the electronics manufacturing area at Sriperumbudur near here, it is learnt Inventec would locate its facility at Foxconn’s existing plant here. The Foxconn Group had earlier said February 10 would be the last day for its facility in the Nokia SEZ here.
