The Tamil Nadu government today allotted 50 acres of land at Oragadam SIPCOT Industrial Park, near Chennai, to the two-wheeler manufacturer, Eicher Motors for its proposed expansion plans.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa presented a letter in this regard to the company's managing director Siddharth Lal at the Secretariat here.
Eicher Motors decided to set up its operations in the state, considering the "infrastructure facilities and conducive (business) atmosphere," an official release said.
The company had proposed to expand operations at a cost of Rs 350 crore and increase annual production from 50,000 units to 1.5 lakh units per year and was looking for suitable land to set up unit, it added.
It further said Eicher was mulling starting operations in a neighbouring state before coming to Tamil Nadu and that the latest venture from the company will ensure 900 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
On July 5, Jayalalithaa, in an address at the CII national council meet in the city, had said that Chennai is all set to emerge as one of the top five global clusters with more automobile majors evincing interest in having presence here and that her vision is to make the city world's largest auto cluster.
