Toshiba JSW to double capacity to 6,000 Mw

Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generator Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between Japan-based Toshiba Corporation and India's JSW Group, is planning to double capacity of its super critical steam turbine and generator manufacturing facility here to 6,000 Mw by the financial year 2015.

The company has already invested around Rs 650 crore for the super critical turbine and generator manufacturing facility, which it officially launched here, said senior company executives.

The facility, which is the second super critical turbine and generator manufacturing plant from Toshiba for super critical thermal power plants, would have an annual production capacity of 3,000 Mw by the end of 2012 fiscal. Toshiba corporation holds 75 per cent stake in the joint venture, while the rest is with the JSW Group — 20 per cent share with JSW Energy and five per cent with JSW Steel.

“This plant would serve the needs of the Indian power generation market along with the exports market including Southeast Asia, Middle East and Africa,” said Itaru Ishibashi, managing director, Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generator Pvt Ltd.

In view of the increasing demand from India and overseas market, the company would increase capacity to 6,000 Mw by 2015, said Norio Sasaki, president and CEO, Toshiba Corporation. It would also increase the employee base in India to 500 over the next three years, from around 200 at present. The target is to achieve $400 million sales from the company in financial year 2015.

According to the MoU signed between the state government and the company, Toshiba JSW is committed to invest around Rs 800 crore in the project between 2009 and 2014. Of this, it has already invested Rs 650 crore. However, company officials refused to reveal the expected investment for the proposed capacity expansion. Work on the new plant, in Chennai, was started in September 2008.

The company is expecting the first set of bulk orders from National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) for two units of 660 Mw project in Uttar Pradesh and another three units of 800 Mw project in Karnataka. Of this, it has received letter of intent (LoI) for the Uttar Pradesh project while the result of tender for the Karnataka project is yet to be released, said Ishibashi.

It has already commenced manufacturing blades for turbines at the Chennai plant, which is spread across around 100 acres.

It would look at resorting more on localisation of projects once the entire manufacturing facility is fully operational. It is expecting a delivery time of 18-20 months for the turbines and generators from the plant.
