Rail accidents killed at least 174 people and injured 658 in 2 years

At least 42 passengers were injured early morning on Friday when four coaches of the Chennai-Mangalore Express derailed near Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district.

The incident took place when the train, moving towards Mangaluru, jumped the track at Puvanur near Vriddhachalam in Cuddalore district, about 200 km from Chennai, police and Southern Railway officials told news agency PTI.

Friday’s mishap was another in a long list of accidents in the past two years — 17th reported train accident since early last year, eight of which have taken place in 2015 alone. These accidents killed at least 174 people and injured 658.

2014

Mar 20: Six coaches of a local train derail at Titwala, 61 km from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. An 18-year-old student killed; nine people, including two women and a railway guard, injured.

Apr 18: Faizabad Junction-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express derails near Asangaon. No casualty or injury reported

May 1: Bomb blast in a train in Chennai. One killed, nine injured

May 4: Diva Junction-Sawantvadi Passenger train of the Konkan Railway derails between Nagothane and Roha stations in Maharashtra. Twenty people killed; about 100 injured

May 26: Gorakhpur-bound Gorakhdham Express rams into a stationary goods train in Sant Kabir Nagar district of UP. About 25 killed; 50 injured

Jun 25: Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express derails near Bihar’s Chhapra town. Four killed; eight injured

Jul 23: A school bus is hit by Nanded Passenger train at an unmanned railway level-crossing in Masaipet village of Medak district, Telangana. The bus is dragged about 200 metres by the train. Eighteen 18 killed

Sep 30: The Lucknow–Barauni Express is rear-ended near Gorakhpur by the Krishak Express, which should have stopped at a red signal. Twelve killed; 46 injured

Dec 14: Eleven sleeper coaches and a pantry car (AC Hot Buffer Car) of the New Delhi-bound Poorva Express derail at Liluah, shortly after leaving Howrah station. No casualty reported 

2015

Feb 13: Bangalore City-Ernakulam Intercity Express derails near Anekal town. 12 killed; about 100 injured

Mar 1: Ernakulam-Hazrat Nizamuddin Mangala Lakshadweep Express derails near Pen station in Maharashtra. No casualty or injury reported

Mar 20: Dehradun-Varanasi Janata Express derails in Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli. 39 killed; 150 injured

May 25: Muri Express derails between Athsarai and Sirathu stations of Uttar Pradesh. Two killed; 100 injured

Jun 28: A Mumbai local train overruns its stoppage point and crashes into the platform at Churchgate station at a high speed. No casualty, but four injured

Aug 4: Mumbai-Varanasi Kamayani Express derails in Madhya Pradesh; coaches fall into Machak river after flash floods dislodge a culvert near Machak river, causing a rail misalignment. Another passenger train, Janata Express, also derails at the same spot. 29 killed; 25 injured

Aug 24: The Bangalore-Nanded Express is rammed into by a granite-laden truck at a level-crossing near Madakasira in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district;  four coaches derail. 6 killed; 39 injured.
