Air India, IndiGo to operate extra flights for stranded Chennai passengers

Air India will allow passengers holding tickets to Chennai to travel to other airports in South India without additional charge. This facility will be valid till December 15.

Air India will also operate a flight from Hyderabad to INS Rajali, a navy base 70 kms from Chennai, to evacuate passengers stuck at Chennai airport, the airline announced on Twitter.

IndiGo is also operating additional flights from Bengaluru to Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Passengers who reach Bangalore with valid tickets from Chennai, whose flights had got cancelled will be accepted without any additional charge or change fees or cancellation fees.

The Chennai airport has been declared shut till Sunday due to floods.

On Thursday, Air India announced that it will accept tickets issued from/to Chennai for travel from/to nearest airport including Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, Vishakhapatnam, Kozhikode, Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Kochi, Vijayawada and Tirupati.

The airline has also waived all its cancellation and refund charges on tickets for/ to Chennai till December 15.

On Wednesday evening Air India carried out a test flight at INS Rajali as a part of a contingency plan to transport over 1,000 passengers stuck at Chennai since Tuesday night and Wednesday.
