The ongoing modernisation process includes web-enabled police station, close circuit television camera surveillance system, modern traffic control system, tech-savvy staff and new police check-posts at tourist destinations. Besides the ‘Dial 100’ instant response system would now come up with GPS-enabled, mobile app-enabled vehicles to locate the crime scene and render immediate help to the victims.
“As many as 9,000 posts are to be filled by this calendar year ranging from constables to deputy superintendent of police,” Surendra Singh, Director General of Police told Business Standard. “Most of them would be filled through Vyapam, internal promotion and state Public Service Commission,” he said. Vyapam conducts written tests etc., for sub-inspector, subedar and constable candidates while state public service commission recruits DSP rank officials.
Prior to handing over the Vyapam scam investigation to the CBI, the prosecuting agency STF (Special Task Force) had also been sanctioned 301 new posts.
To modernise the police through new emergency helpline like ‘Dial 100’ or CCTV camera controlled surveillance system, the department needs more contingent. “Our plan outlay has reached Rs 900 crore from few crores some years ago, modernisations is an important process and we need personnel for smooth functioning,” the DGP said.
Existing police stations have been sanctioned 1,542 new posts, Special Task Force has been given 301 posts of different ranks, police telecommunication department had been sanctioned 300 new posts, cyber zonal offices have been allotted 97 posts, and modernised traffic system has also been allocated 225 posts. “We are also sprucing up our instant response Dial 100 system. This would work round the clock to respond to any call through GPS-enabled vehicles. Each vehicle will be on ready-to-response mode equipped with at least two police. It would also be mobile app-enabled. The service would start probably by coming 15 August,” he said.
More police would be required for city surveillance system in 61 towns to response to any casualty or untoward situation. The department also deploys its newly recruited staff in Tourist Police station which are planned to be set up in 12 places of tourists importance. As of now, the state has 1,056 police stations (Thanas) which are in process to go online, 500 police stations are already online (web-enabled) now.
