The Shiv Sena-BJP controlled BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday announced 20 per cent water cut in Greater Mumbai from Thursday due to inadequate rainfall, especially in  water reservoirs areas.

The city had faced 20 per cent water cut in July last year and 30 per cent in July 2009 to cope with the crisis due to poor rainfall received by the city in June.

Water cut will be applicable to residential, commercial and industrial consumers across the metropolis.

This apart, the civic body will supply only 50 per cent of the total requirement of water to malls, swimming pools, bottling units, five-star hotels and racecourses.

Further, BMC will also impose 20% cut in the water supplied to adjoining Thane and Bhiwandi municipal corporations and other municipalities.

BMC official informed that the city needs water for 304 days on October 1, 2015 to sustain till the onset of the next monsoon.

However, he admitted that water level in reservoirs is still lagging behind and therefore the 20% cut was imposed.
