BMC to release asymptomatic patients to ensure beds for needy

As Covid-19 cases are going up rapidly in Mumbai, the city civic body on Monday decided to discharge asymptomatic patients at the earliest to vacate beds for the patients with more serious symptoms.

 

The civic body has also decided to place the order for procuring 1.5 lakh injections of antiviral drug Remdesivir and other medical equipment to avoid any potential shortage of medicines at hospitals, a senior official said.

 

In its order, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that no asymptomatic Covid-19 positive patient without any comorbidities will be allotted a COVID bed in any public or private hospital.

Germany reports more AstraZeneca clot cases

Germany's medical regulator says it has received reports of 21 cases of rare blood clots in people who had recently received AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine.

 

The Paul Ehrlich Institute said in an email Monday to The Associated Press that seven people affected by the blood clots have died.

 

The incidence of an unusual form of blood clot in the head, known as sinus vein thrombosis, prompted several European countries to temporarily halt the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine earlier this month. After a review by medical experts. the European Union's medical regulator EMA recommended that warnings about possible rare side effects should be added to the vaccine information provided for patients and doctors.

Gujarat sees 2,252 new Covid-19 cases

Gujarat's Covid-19 caseload reached 3,03,118 after 2,252 people were detected with the infection on Monday, while the day also saw eight deaths and 1,731 people getting discharged, an official said.

 

The state's toll is now 4,500 and the recovery count stands at 2,86,577, leaving it with 12,041 active cases, including 149 critical patients, he added.

 

"Three deaths each took place in Ahmedabad and Surat and one each in Panchmahal and Rajkot. Surat reported 677 new cases, the highest in the state, followed by Ahmedabad with 612, Rajkot 242, Vadodara 236, Bhavnagar 45, Gandhinagar 44, Jamnagar 33, among others," he said.

Bosnia has set a record daily number of fatalities from Covid-19 as the Balkan nation struggles to contain a surge in infections.

 

Authorities on Monday said that 93 people have died in the past 24 hours after being infected with the new coronavirus, while 856 people tested positive.

 

Bosnia has reported among the highest death rates from the virus in the Balkans and wider Europe.

Covid: 902 new cases in Rajasthan

Rajasthan recorded 902 Covid-19 cases on Monday, taking the infection count to 3,31,578, an official report said.

 

No Covid-19-related death was recorded in the last 24 hours, it said.

 

Of the new cases, the maximum 142 cases were reported from Jodhpur followed by 135 from Jaipur, the report said.

Kalyan-Dombivali civic body restricts entry of visitors

As Covid-19 cases rise in the twin city of Kalyan and Dombivali in Thane district of Maharashtra, the local municipal corporation has put restrictions on the number of people visiting the civic office, an official said on Monday.

 

Similarly, the number of visitors to civic ward offices has also been restricted.

 

In an order issued on Monday, Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) Commissioner Vijay Suryavanshi said former corporators and office-bearers should book an appointment over the phone and visit the civic office only if it is necessary.

Goa sees 128 Covid-19 cases, 2 deaths, 101 recoveries

Goa's coronavirus caseload went up by 128 and reached 57,712 on Monday, while two patients died and 101 people got discharged during the day, an official said.

 

The toll in the state now stands at 828 and the recovery count is 55,455, leaving it with an active caseload of 1,429, he added.

 

With 1,457 samples being examined in Monday, the number of tests in Goa went up to 540,796.

One death, six fresh virus cases in UP's Muzaffarnagar

One more person died from coronavirus in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar on Monday as six fresh cases surfaced, taking the infection count in the district to 8,844, according to an official.

 

So far,111 people have succumbed to the infection in the district.

 

According to Chief Medical Officer SK Aggarwal, the 72-year-old woman died at a medical college here. She was admitted to the medical facility on March 20.

Madhya Pradesh sees 2,323 new Covid-19 cases, nine deaths

Madhya Pradesh on Monday reported 2,323 fresh coronavirus positive cases, taking the tally of infections to 291,006, the state Health department said.

 

With nine more patients succumbing to the viral infection in the last 24 hours, the overall fatality count in the state rose to 3,967.

 

A total of 1,349 patients were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, taking the count of recoveries in Madhya Pradesh to 271,889, the department said.

UK vaccination rates lowest among older Black people

New figures from Britain's statistics agency showed Monday that older people from Black African backgrounds are more than seven times as likely as white Britons to have not received a coronavirus vaccine.

 

More than 30 million people in the UK or about 57 per cent of all adults have received a first vaccine dose. But significant concerns remain about lower vaccination uptakes and hesitancy to take the jab among some ethnic minority groups.

 

The Office for National Statistics said Monday that among people 70 years old or older, the lowest vaccination rates were seen among people identifying as Black African, at 58.8 per cent, and Black Caribbean, at 68.7 per cent.

Mumbai civic body to procure 1.5 lakh Remdesivir injections

Owing to a surge in Covid-19 cases in Mumbai, the city civic body will place the order for procuring 1.5 lakh injections of antiviral drug Remdesivir and other medical equipment to avoid any potential shortage of medicines at hospitals, a senior official said on Monday.

 

He also said that a sizeable number of new cases are reported from high-rise buildings.

LIVE: UK PM urges caution, hails Great British summer of sport as lockdown eases

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday called on people to remain cautious as he officially lifted the stay-at-home order to allow the first phase of easing the strict Covid-19 lockdown, allowing for more outdoors activities.

 

Johnson said that he hoped that this first phase of his roadmap to ease restrictions would kickstart a "Great British summer of sport" as people would be able to hold outdoor games and sporting activities. But he stressed the message for people to continue to work from home where possible as it is vital that "we don't overdo it" and risk all the progress that has been made in controlling the spread of the deadly virus.

 

"Today marks the next stage of our roadmap to cautiously ease restrictions in England. Please follow the new rules carefully so that we can gradually get back to normal together, said Johnson.

Indian Army donates 100,000 Covid vaccine doses to Nepal Army

The Indian Army has gifted one lakh doses of India-made anti-Covid-19 vaccines to the Nepal Army as part of the efforts of the militaries of the two neighbours to enhance bilateral cooperation.

 

The vaccines were handed over by the Indian Army officials to their counterparts from the Nepal Army at the Tribhuvan International Airport on Sunday, the Indian Embassy here tweeted.

 

"100,000 doses of #MadeInIndia Covid-19 vaccine gifted by Indian Army to the Nepali Army were received at Tribhuvan Airport," the mission tweeted.

 

India has previously gifted one million doses of Made in India' Covid-19 vaccines to Nepal for the immediate requirement of Nepal's healthcare and front-line workers.
