20,500 passengers travel in Kolkata Metro as services resume after 5 months

Around 20,500 passengers travelled on the Kolkata Metro which resumed operations on Monday with reduced services and safety protocols after a gap of more than five months due to the Covid-19 pandemic, an official said.
 

Passengers were happy to be back on the Metro premises after March 23, when regular services were suspended to stem the spread of coronavirus infection. Special trains, however, were run for NEET aspirants and their guardians on Sunday.
 

"Services resumed at 8 am and around 20,500 commuted till 8 pm. The last trains from the originating stations on both sides commenced their journey at 7 pm and completed it by 8 pm," Metro Railway General Manager Manoj Joshi told PTI.
 

Previously, Metro services were available for longer durations.
 

Joshi said that all safety protocols including social distancing norms were followed.
 

Trains halted at stations for 30 seconds instead of 20 seconds, as was the previous practice, to avoid rush during boarding and deboarding, a Metro Railway spokesperson said.
 

A total of 110 trains 55 each in up and down directions were operated on the Noapara-Kavi Subhash line at an interval of 10 minutes during peak hours, she said.
 

Similarly, 72 trains were run on the East-West line between Sector V and Salt Lake Stadium stations, the spokesperson said.
 

She said that services will remain suspended on Sundays for sanitisation of rakes and stations.

High food prices keep India's retail inflation above 6% in August

The consumer price index(CPI)- based inflation came in at 6.7 per cent for August, from 6.73% in July, courtesy food inflation refusing to soften below 9 per cent.

 

India’s economy now struggles to cope with low growth and high inflation five months into the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

The retail inflation has now remained above the upper band set by the Reserve Bank of India of 6 per cent for nine consecutive months, though not successively for three financial quarters yet. Core inflation, too, has been inching up in the pandemic era, approaching 6 per cent now, from 4 per cent earlier this year. Read more

Odisha reports record 4,198 new Covid-19 cases, 11 fresh fatalities

Odisha registered its highest single-day spike of Covid-19 cases on Monday as 4,198 more people, including state BJP chief Samir Mohanty, tested positive for the infection, a health official said.
 

The fresh infections have pushed the state's coronavirus tally to 1,55,005.
 

Eleven more patients succumbed to the infection, taking the state's coronavirus death toll to 637, the official said.
 

Odisha had reported its previous highest single-day spike of 3,996 cases on September 11, he said.
 

The state also registered recovery of as many as 3,382 patients taking the total number of persons cured of the infection to 1,22,024 which is 78.72 per cent of the caseload.
 

The state now has 32,291 active cases.
 

As many as 2,476 new cases were reported from different quarantine centres, while 1,722 people tested positive for the infection during contact tracing.
 

The new cases included 41 inmates of the Circle Jail at Baripada, said Vinit Bharadwaj, the District Magistrate cum Collector of Mayurbhanj.
 

The number of infections among jail inmates has increased to 81, the collector said.
 

Khurda district, under which Bhubaneswar falls, reported the highest number of new cases at 758, followed by Cuttack (367) and Puri (310). Ten other districts registered more than 100 fresh infections each, he said.

Covid-19: Farooq Abdullah says oxygen shortage in Jammu hospitals worrisome

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Monday termed the reported oxygen shortage in Jammu hospitals amid the Covid-19 pandemic worrisome and claimed that nothing substantial was being done to alleviate the problem, a party statement said.
 

Replying to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Abdullah said the situation is reportedly quite worrisome particularly in the wake of the alarming spike in Covid-19 cases during the past one week.
 

"Reportedly, hospitals managing Covid-19 cases are facing acute shortage of oxygen, thereby putting the lives of critical coronavirus patients at risk. It is distressing to know that nothing substantial is being done to alleviate the problem," he said.
 

The statement said Abdullah also raised the issue of 60 "dysfunctional" ventilators that are meant to provide life support to critically ill patients. He called for immediate necessary measures to strengthen the healthcare support system.

Covid-19: Gujarat CM's voluntary test returns negative

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Monday tested negative for coronavirus after volunteering for the process in keeping with his "test is best" slogan, said officials.
 

A state government release said Rupani took the test to encourage people to come forward without fear to find out if they have the infection.
 

Rupani has coined the "test is best" slogan and said they are necessary for timely detection and treatment of the novel coronavirus infection, it added.

Gujarat: 1,334 Covid-19 cases push tally to near 115,000

Gujarat on Monday reported 1,334 new Covid-19 cases, taking the total count of infections to 1,14,996, state health department said. The cumulative toll rose to 3,230 with 17 more deaths, it said.

 

At the same time, 1,255 patients were discharged after treatment in the day, taking the number of recoveries to 95,265, the department said in a release.

 

Gujarat's case recovery rate now stands at 82.84 per cent, it stated.

 

Out of the 17 fatalities, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Surat reported three deaths each, while two patients died each in Jamnagar, Rajkot and Bhavnagar. One patient succumbed each in Bharuch and Vadodara, the department said.

Maharashtra's Covid-19 tally rises to 1,077,374 with 17,066 fresh cases

Maharashtra's Covid-19 tally on Monday rose to 1077374 after 17066 fresh cases, a health official said. With 257 deaths in the last 24 hours, the toll in the state has reached 29894, the official said. So far 755850 patients have been discharged after recovery, while there are 291256 active cases, the official said.

The number of tests stands at 5321116, he added.

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh has tested positive for coronavirus, his grandson state minister Sandeep Singh said on Monday.

 

The UP Technical and Medical Education minister disclosed this on his Twitter handle and prayed for the 88-year-old BJP leader's recovery.

Madhya Pradesh reports record 2,483 Covid-19 cases; 29 die

Madhya Pradesh on Monday recorded the highest single-day spike of 2,483 coronavirus cases, taking the statewide count to 90,730, health officials said.

 

With 29 more fatalities, the death toll went up to 1,791, they said. Of them, five patient each died in Indore and Bhopal, four in Neemuch, three each in Gwalior and Jabalpur, two in Sagar and one each in Khargone, Morena, Betul, Rewa, Jhabua, Dewas and Tikamgarh, the officials said.

 

Also, 1,713 patients were discharged from hospitals, taking the count of recoveries in the state to 67,711, they said.

 

At 379, Indore reported the highest number of infections in the state, followed by 244 cases in Bhopal, 227 cases in Jabalpur and 185 in Gwalior.

1,137 new Covid-19 cases, 1,966 more recoveries in Bihar

The Covid-19 recovery rate in Bihar rose to 90.91 per cent on Monday from 89.99 per cent just two days ago, with 1,966 more people having been cured of the disease in the state, a health department official said.

 

The total number of recoveries currently stands 1,45,019, the official said. At least 1,137 more people tested positive for Covid- 19 in the state, pushing the tally to 1,59,526.

 

Bihar, at present, has 13,675 active coronavirus cases, while 831 people have succumbed to the infection. As many as 1,02,330 samples have been tested for COVID-19 since Sunday, raising the total number of such examinations to 49,86,747, the official added.

Andhra Pradesh's daily Covid-19 cases slump below 8,000 after weeks

Fresh Covid-19 cases in Andhra Pradesh slumped below the 8,000 mark after about three weeks on Monday, taking the tally to 5.75 lakh, but the number of tests too came down by more than 10,000.

 

As many as 9,764 patients got cured and discharged from hospitals, while 60 more succumbed to the pandemic as the toll mounted to 4,972, a government bulletin said.

 

With 7,956 fresh cases detected in the last 24 hours from 9 am on Sunday, the total number of cases rose to 5,75,079 while the recoveries increased to 4,76,903.

 

The number of active cases decreased further to 93,204.

Goa adds 306 new Covid-19 patients; active cases below 5,000

As many as 306 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in Goa on Monday, taking the statewide tally to 24,898, a health department official said. Fourteen more patients died due to the infection, taking the toll to 304 in the coastal state, he said.

 

The official said 519 people recovered in the last 24 hours, taking the number of discharged cases to 19,648. In all 1,093 samples were tested of which 306 were found to be positive for the viral disease, he said.

 

The number of active cases stood below the 5,000-mark at 4,946. Goa's Covid-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 24,898, new cases 306, deaths 304, discharged 19,648, active cases 4,946, people tested till date 2,25,910.

131 new cases push Nagaland's Covid-19 tally to 5,214

Nagaland reported 131 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, pushing the tally to 5,214, Health Minister S Pangnyu Phom said. Among the 131 people who tested positive for the infection on Monday, 77 were Army personnel.

 

The minister also said, 14 patients were cured of the disease on Monday - 9 in Kiphire, 4 in Dimapur and 1 in Mon.

 

The recovery rate of Covid-19 patients is 74.74 per cent on Monday. It had gone up to 87.82 per cent on August 8.

Tamil Nadu reports 5,752 new Covid-19 cases, 53 deaths

Tamil Nadu reported 5,752 fresh Covid cases on Monday, taking the tally to 5,08,511 while the death toll mounted to 8,434 with 53 more fatalities. Of the fresh infections, Chennai reported 991 and the remainder was spread across Tamil Nadu, a health department bulletin said.

 

The state capital accounted for 1,49,583 out of the five lakh plus total positive cases. The deceased included two men aged 29 and 90, a 33-year- old woman and in total 50 had co-morbidities.

Mumbai airport launches Covid-19 testing facility for arriving passengers

Mumbai airport has launched the Covid-19 testing facility for all arriving passengers , which can be availed at a charge of Rs 1,600 onwards, a move that would help international passengers opt out of institutional quarantine, depending upon the test results, a release said on Monday.

 

The RT-PCR testing facility, which is in compliance with the standards of the ICMR and the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), is planned to be expanded further for departing passengers as well shortly, Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) said in the release.

 

The provision for 24X7 coronavirus testing at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) comes days after GMR group-owned Delhi airport set up a similar mechanism on its premises. As per the latest directive of the civil aviation ministry, airports are directed to implement a testing facility at the airport for international transit passengers booked on a connecting domestic flight, MIAL said.

Covid-19: Goa BJP MLAs Fernandes, Sopte test positive

Goa BJP MLAs Antonio alias Tony Fernandes and Dayanand Sopte have tested positive for novel coronavirus infection, a senior state health department official said on Monday.

St Cruz MLA Fernandes is in a private hospital since Sunday while Mandrem legislator Sopte has opted for home isolation after exhibiting mild symptoms, the official said. Over the past two months, several MLAs, including Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, were detected with the infection.

2,540 Covid-19 cases, 15 more deaths in Kerala

Kerala reported 2,540 Covid-19 cases on Monday, taking the infection tally to 1,10,818, while 15 more deaths took the toll up to 454, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said. As many as 2,110 people recovered from the virus today and 30,486 people are presently under treatment for the infection, he told reporters here.

 

So far, 79,813 people have recovered.

 

Of the positive cases, 34 had come from abroad and 73 from other states, while 2346 people were infected through contact and the source of infection of 212 people was not known, he said.

Noida: 141 new Covid-19 cases, tally climbs to 10,332

Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar district on Monday recorded 141 new Covid-19 patients and the infection tally reached 10,332, official data showed. The number of active cases stood at 1,979, down from 2,008 on Sunday, according to the data released by the UP Health department for a 24-hour period.

 

The district, adjoining Delhi, has so far recorded 48 deaths linked to the pandemic, with one of the lowest mortality rates 0.46 per cent -- in the state, it showed.

Dharavi reports 23 new Covid-19 patients; active cases at 156

The tally of Covid-19 cases in Mumbai's Dharavi increased to 2,938 on Monday with 23 more persons testing positive for the infection, the city civic body said.

 

Notably, this was the fifth consecutive day of double digit rise in cases in the slum-dominated area where Covid-19 mitigation measures undertaken by authorities had received praise from various quarters.

 

Since the past more than a month, Dharavi used to report single digit cases barring a few days. A BMC official said 2,512 patients have already recovered in Dharavi and discharged from hospitals.

Concern should be number of deaths due to Covid-19, not the number of cases: Delhi CM

Amid a surge in Covid-19 cases, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said the coronavirus death rate in the national capital is perhaps the lowest in the world and the concern should be the number of deaths due the virus and not the number of cases.

 

"The largest number of Covid-19 tests are being carried out in Delhi at present. Eleven per cent Delhi has been tested so far with nearly 2.1 million tests. The concern should be number of deaths not the number of Covid cases. Death rate in Delhi is perhaps the lowest in the whole world," the chief minister said in his address during the one-day session of the Delhi Assembly.

UP records 62 fresh coronavirus deaths, over 5,200 new cases

Uttar Pradesh recorded 62 Covid-19 deaths on Monday, while the number of cases went up by 5,208, taking the overall figures to 4,491 fatalities and 3,17,195 infections, officials said.

 

"The count of active Covid-19 cases in the state stands at 67,287, while 2,45,417 people have recovered till date," a heath bulletin issued here said.

 

The Monday additions took the total number of Covid-19 cases to 3,17,195, while the death toll reached 4,491, the bulletin said. The fresh cases included 992 from Lucknow, 346 from Allahabad, 341 from Kanpur, 278 from Ghaziabad, 186 rom Gorakhpur, 158 from Meerut and 154 from Varanasi, it added.

Tripura's Covid-19 tally rises to 19,187 with 255 fresh cases

At least 255 more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Tripura on Monday, pushing the tally in the state to 19,187, a health department official said.

 

The death toll has risen to 200 with six more fatalities, he said. West Tripura district, which also comprises state capital Agartala, accounted for 110 of the coronavirus deaths, the official said.

 

The state now has 7,429 active cases, while 11,536 people have recovered from the disease, he said, adding, 22 patients have migrated to other states. A total of 3,31,374 samples have been tested for Covid-19 so far.

AYUSH practices inducted into protocol for recovering Covid-19 patients

Several AYUSH practices have been inducted into the management protocol for patients who have recovered from Covid-19, an official statement said on Monday.

 

In the statement, the AYUSH ministry said the protocol provides an integrated holistic approach for patients of Covid to care at home and is not meant to be used as preventive and curative therapy. As of now, patients who have recovered from acute Covid-19 illness have continued to report a variety of symptoms like fatigue, cough, sore throat, the ministry said.

 

"The post-Covid follow-up protocol, on individual level, advises continued appropriate use of mask, hand and respiratory hygiene, physical distancing etc. Adequate consumption of hot water and immunity promoting AYUSH medicine is advised after prescribed by a qualified practitioner of AYUSH," it said.
