DATA STORY: 82% of all Covid cases in India have recovered, 1.6% patients have died

Relief for India on the coronavirus front continued for a sixth straight day on Thursday, with the count of active cases reducing by 1,995. The number has declined on a net basis for six days in a row, reducing cumulatively by 51,372 from the 1,017,754 peak seen on September 18 to 966,382 now. A jump of 87,374 in the number of cured cases, meanwhile, pushed recoveries in the country to 4,674,987, or 81.55 per cent all infections reported so far.
 
While a single-day increase of 86,508 in total cases took India’s overall tally to 5,732,518, its death toll reached 91,149 with 1,129 fatalities being reported in 24 hours.
 
The second-most-affected country by active and total cases, and third by fatality, India has added 614,265 in the past seven days. Here are the key takeaways from the coronavirus data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Thursday (September 24, 2020):
 
  • India now accounts for 13.00% of all active cases globally (one in every 8 active cases), and 9.28% of all deaths (one in every 11).
  • Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in just 12 days.
  • The count of active cases across India has reduced by 1995, against 7484 on Wednesday. The states that have reported the biggest 24-hour jump in active cases are Kerala (2405), Karnataka (1499), Maharashtra (1074), Rajasthan (378), and Assam (325).
  • With 87374 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate has improved to 81.55%; the fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.59%.
  • India’s new daily closed cases stand at 88,503 — 1,129 deaths and 87,374 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.28%.
  • India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 1.6%.
  • India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 45.6 days, and for deaths at 55.6 days.
  • The states that have seen their respective biggest single-day spikes in total cases are Kerala (5376), Rajasthan (1946), Puducherry (543), and Arunachal Pradesh (289).
  • Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (21029), Andhra Pradesh (7228), Karnataka (6997), Kerala (5376), and Tamil Nadu (5325).
  • Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Chhattisgarh (60.82%), J&K (68.92%), Kerala (70.67%), Uttarakhand (71.65%), and Maharashtra (75.65%).

  • Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases) – are Maharashtra (20.69%), Chandigarh (15.71%), Puducherry (15.63%), Goa (12.34%), and Karnataka (12.31%).
  • Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Goa (28.63%), Maharashtra (23.5%), Nagaland (14.66%), Chandigarh (14.4%), and Uttarakhand (12.94%).
  • Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (136133), J&K (110927), Andhra Pradesh (101537), Tamil Nadu (88844), and Assam (88109).
  • The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (1263799), Andhra Pradesh (646530), Tamil Nadu (557999), Karnataka (540847), and Uttar Pradesh (369686).
  • Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported a net addition of 21,029 cases. The state has added 203491 cases in the past 10 days.
  • Andhra Pradesh, the second-most-affected state by total cases, has added 53,770 cases in the past seven days alone. On Thursday it added 7228 cases.
  • Tamil Nadu, which has seen its tally going up by 5325, has added more than 5,000 cases on each of the past 64 days.
  • Karnataka has reported 6997 cases, to take its tally to 540847.
  • Delhi has added 3714 cases to take its tally to 256789.
