Shopping realities

According to Gartner, Inc. in less than two years, the number of consumers shopping after visualising products through Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) is slated to touch 100 million. With the technologies already shaking up the customer experience as Gartner predicts that the by 2020, the 100 million chunk will comprise both online and in-store shoppers.  “Retailers are under increasing pressure to explain the purpose of physical stores, and take control of the fulfilment and return process for cross-channel execution,” said Hanna Karki, principal research analyst at Gartner. He added that the consumers are progressively defining the value provided by the experiences they receive from retailers. “As a result of these pressures, retailers are turning to AR and VR to offer customers a unified retail experience inside and outside retail stores.” Referring to a survey from last year, Gartner said that by 2020, 46 percent of retailers planned to deploy either AR or VR solutions to meet customer service experience requirements.
