Delhi Police trying for extradition of match fixing accused

Delhi Police is making efforts for extradition of Sanjiv Chawla, who was arrested in June in London, from the United Kingdom in connection with match fixing case of 2000.

The force has also assured the UK authorities that human rights of Chawla will be safeguarded in jail here.

The Crime Branch of Delhi Police had filed chargesheet in the case registered at Chankyapuri police station in 2013.

The case pertains to cricket match fixing involving South Africa captain late Hansie Cronje and other cricketers/ bookies, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Yadav said.

The extradition warrants were issued by the court against Chawla who was later arrested by UK authorities on June 14, the officer said.

Specialist Prosecutors Andrew Glover and Alison Rlley of the Extradition Unit in UKlaterinformed through the Ministry of External Affairs that the accused did not consent to extradition.

It was also informed that the extradition process has been started but the case is in the early stages.

They also mentioned the issue of prison conditions which are often raised in extradition cases, Yadav said.

Delhi Police in its reply assured the prosecutors that human rights are safeguarded in Tihar jail where Chawla might be kept.

The relatives as well as the legal counsels are allowed to meet the detained persons, and other facilities are provided as per jail manual, he said.

The officer added that the 'Red Notice' through CBI Interpol has also been issued against another fugitive in this case, Man Mohan Kumar Khattar.

Non-bailable warrants too have been issued against him this year.
