A four-member gang stealing money by accessing ATM card details and pin numbers have admitted to Andhra Pradesh police that they were doing it on the back of security lapses found in State Bank of India (SBI) and State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) cards.
They were doing online transactions using the stolen data of the cards of the victims as SBI/SBH cards only compared card number and PIN and not other details such as name and expiry date, a statement issued by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of AP police said.
The CID team nabbed prime accused Nageswara Reddy and his three associates a couple of days ago while he was on a 'shoulder browsing' activity in the city, it said.
The gang visited different ATM centres waiting for SBI/SBH card holders withdrawing cash and then noted down in their mobiles the last four digits of the cad number and the PIN typed by the victim. Then they found the rest of the digits of these cards and used them for online shopping.
The gang has confessed to have been involved in 43 cases of stealing mostly in rural and semi-urban areas. On the confession of the kingpin, police seized 88 gold coins weighing about 123 gm, 34 mobile phones, a card and Rs 1.5 lakh in net cash.
