The Madras High Court on Thursday dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of Chennai-based hotelier Vikram Aggarwal in connection with the IPL spot-fixing scandal.

The petitioner's bail plea was rejected by Vacation Judge CT Selvam, after Advocate General of Tamil Nadu AL Somayaji stated that betting had emerged as an issue of national importance and it was not advisable to grant him the advance relief at this stage on the grounds of being capable to influence the investigation.

Senior Counsel AR L Sundaresan, who was representing the petitioner, told the court that Aggarwal received summons from Mumbai police on May 23 directing him to appear before it by May 30. The counsel argued that police were unable to gather enough evidence against his client.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu police said it would take all the possible legal actions, including arrest, as the prescribed deadline for the voluntary surrender before the cops had expired on May 30.

The police said the hotelier used the phone connection in his wife's name to get in touch with the bookies.
