Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli (IIM Trichy) is planning to set up its own campus in Trichy with an investment of Rs 300-350 crore, aiming to increase its capacity to more than double.

The institute, which was launched in June 2011, currently have its premises in National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus, Trichy, with a capacity of around 110-115 seats.

The institute is planning to commence construction works in another three months and looks at starting operations on the new campus after 18-24 months from the time of starting construction, said Prafulla Agnihotri, director, IIM Trichy.

"The estimated investment to set up the new campus is around Rs 300-350 crore, and it could go up. The funding for the new campus is available from MHRD," said Agnihotri. The capacity is expected to increase to 130 students in first year and another 130 students in second year of the programme along with another 10-15 PhD students per year.

Foundation stone for the IIM Trichy was laid at Mathur, near Trichy in January, 2011, on 172 acre of land provided by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The institute would operate from the temporary premises of NIT Trichy till its own campus gets ready.

IIM Trichy, which has launched a satellite centre in Chennai in November, 2012, within a year of the launch of the institute in Trichy, is also looking at expanding the Chennai facility as a residential campus. "It is in the initial stages of planning. If we could get five acre land support from the government, we can develop the centre into a fullfledged residential campus," said Agnihotri.

The institute is also in the final stage of signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a research collaboration with a global IT major based in the country. The MoU will be for joint research with the IT company in various projects. The IIM, within the first one year of operation, has partnered with  IAE Graduate School of Management, Marseille, France for students exchange, faculty exchange and joint research by the faculty members of both the institutes. In the first year, IIM has sent two students to IAE at Marseille.

The Chennai centre offers executive education programmes by starting the Post-Graduate Programme in Business Management (PGPBM) and is intended to expand the executive education programmes, to deliver similar long-duration programmes and other short-duration programmes and management development programmes on the interactive learning platform, according to a recent announcement.

The institute has recently invited proposals for technology partnership from firms capably of providing technical and administrative infrastructure on a revenue sharing basis. Interest parties should take the responsibility of marketing these programmes, providing the infrastructure including sufficient number of studios, broadband internet based communication network and electronic classrooms at various locations in India, and depending on the needs, in other Asian and Middle Eastern countries as well.
