The major reservoir on the Cauvery, Krishnarajasagar (KRS), is heading towards its maximum level with the increasing inflow on account of continuous rains in the catchment of areas of Kodagu.

The level stood this evening at 119.45 ft, five feet short of the maximum level of 124.89 ft. The inflow had risen to 33,392 cusecs and the reservoir could fill up in the next 2-3 days. However, a good quantum of 21,526 cusecs was being released, and into the canals and that would benefit farmers coming under their atchkats. Together, 21,526 cusecs water was being released from the reservoir.

The Kabini and the Harangi reservoirs, though, have reached their full level and excess inflow is discharged and water levels maintained at the safe levels, keeping in mind the safety aspects of the dam. Water is being released into the canals from these dams too. Hullahalli and Ramapura canals receive supply from August 1 for short-term paddy crops. It will continue till November 28, with a break in between.

Meanwhile, elaborate security and safety measures have been taken up at the KRS. Besides regular monitoring of the inflow and levels, security measures have been tightened to ensure the dam's safety and protection.

Heavy rains in Kodagu have seen the waterfalls in the district reach their full glory. The heavy discharge from both the KRS and Kabini to the Cauvery's waterfalls at Gaganachukki and Bharachukki, in Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts, have been attracting a large number of visitors.

Soon after the reservoir reaches its maximum level, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will make offerings or 'bagina' on an auspicious day as per tradition. He is scheduled to visit Mysore tomorrow, but his programme schedule does not include the Cauvery worship.
