UK records another 39,962 new coronavirus cases

Another 39,962 people in Britain have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 8,773,674, according to official figures released Sunday.

 

The country also reported a further 72 coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 139,533. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test.

 

There are currently 8,238 patients in hospital with COVID-19.

 

The latest data came as a "record number" of coronavirus booster jabs were administered on Saturday, with more than 800,000 shots given in the past 72 hours, according to the National Health Service (NHS).

 

Saturday was the biggest booster day on record, with more than 325,100 vaccines given.

NIA arrests ISIS operative in Islamic State conspiracy case

The NIA has arrested an alleged Islamic State terrorist for allegedly radicalising and recruiting gullible Muslims and sending them to Syria to join ISIS, an official said on Sunday.

Muhammad Tauqir Mahmood (33) of Bengaluru was arrested on Saturday, the official of the premier investigation agency said.

The case was registered under sections of the IPC, the UA (P) Act against Mahmood, Zuhab Hameed, Irfan Nasir and Mohd Shihab for having affiliation with the banned terrorist organisations ISIS/ISIL/Daesh, the official said.

India's first indigenous aircraft carrier begins second phase of sea trials

India's first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) Vikrant set sail on Sunday for the second sea trials, ahead of its planned induction into the Indian Navy by August next year.

The 40,000-tonne aircraft carrier, the largest and most complex warship to be built in India, successfully completed a five-day maiden sea voyage in August.

Following the first sea trials, the Navy had said that the performance of key systems of the warship was found to be satisfactory.

Kerala govt to launch project to keep school children off drugs

In a major initiative to wean school children away from the growing scourge of alcohol, narcotics and substance abuse, Vimukthi Mission of the Excise Department in Kerala is all set to launch a project to channelise the energies of students into creative pursuits of arts and sports, besides helping them improve their academic performance.

The project, 'Unarvu', which means 'Awakening', will be carried out by the Vimukthi Mission, in association with Parents and Teachers' Association of the concerned schools, representatives of civic bodies and residents associations besides traders of the locality.

'Unarvu,' seeks to dissuade children from using drugs, instill confidence and train them in creative pursuits, turn their minds from pernicious habits in a bid to spot and nourish their talents in arts and sports, thus saving their future from being wrecked, the state government said in a release.

Sikkim reported 32 new Covid-19 cases, six more than the previous day, pushing the tally to 31,900, a Health department bulletin said on Sunday.

The Himalayan state had reported 26 cases on Saturday, 23 on Friday and 19 on Thursday.

Of the 32 new cases, East Sikkim district registered 23 followed by seven in South Sikkim and two in West Sikkim district.

Witness claims NCB sought bribe from SRK to release Aryan: Report

In a new bombshell, a witness in the cruise ship rave party raid case has accused the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of allegedly demanding bribes from Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan to release his son Aryan Khan, here on Sunday.

3 security personnel injured in militant firing in Kashmir
