Pune sees 16,618 COVID-19 cases, highest single day addition to district's tally

Pune on Friday recorded 16,618 COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day addition so far, taking the overall tally in the district to 13,13,016, while 10 deaths increased the toll to 19,343, a health official said.

 

The district's positivity rate (cases detected per 100 tests) is over 41 percent, he added. Of the new cases, 8,301 were reported from Pune city, 5,182 from Pimpri Chinchwad, and 3,135 from rural and cantonment areas, he said.

 

"As many as 10,177 patients recovered from the infection on Friday. There are 85,277 active patients, including 2,786 who are hospitalized," the official informed.

Assam logs 6,897 new cases, 15 more people die

Assam on Friday registered over 13 per cent fall in fresh COVID-19 cases compared to the previous day, with 6,897 more people testing positive for the infection, the National Health Mission (NHM) said in a bulletin.

 

The state's positivity rate also decreased from 12.92 per cent on Thursday to 12.13 per cent, as 56,849 samples were tested for COVID-19.

 

Assam had recorded 7,929 fresh on the previous day. With 6,84,954 total COVID-19 positive cases in Assam, the overall positivity rate stands at 2.49 per cent against total testing of 2,74,90,730 samples so far.

Delhi sees 10,756 new Covid cases; positivity rate declines to 18.04%

Delhi logged 10,756 fresh Covid cases and 38 more fatalities due to the infection on Friday, while the positivity rate declined to 18.04 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department.

 

As many as 434 people have succumbed to the disease in January so far. According to officials, 59,629 Covid tests were conducted on Thursday, as against 57,290 a day ago.

 

Delhi on Thursday reported 12,306 Covid cases and 43 fatalities, while the positivity rate was 21.48 per cent. On Wednesday, the city had logged 35 deaths and 13,785 Covid cases with a positivity rate of 23.86 per cent.

12 deaths, 9,655 fresh virus cases in Haryana

Twelve more Covid related deaths were reported in Haryana on Friday as 9,655 fresh cases surfaced, pushing the state's infection count to 8,92,550, according to a Health Department bulletin.

 

So far, 10.154 people have died from the infection in the state.

 

The worst-hit Gurugram district reported 3,509 fresh cases.

 

Faridabad (911), Karnal (443), Panchkula (547), Sonipat (590), Ambala (451), Hisar (340) and Rewari (362) were among other districts affected by the surge in cases.

 

While four fatalities were reported from Yamunanagar, three were reported from Gurugram, two from Nuh while Panipat, Karnal and Faridabad, reported a fatality each, as per the bulletin.

 

The total active cases in the state were 62,016.

Daily COVID-19 cases near 30,000-mark in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu on Friday added 29,870 coronavirus infections, pushing the caseload to 30,72,666 while 33 more fatalities took the death toll to 37,145 as the state continued to report an upward tick in new COVID-19 cases.

 

Recoveries went up to 28,48,163 with 21,684 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours leaving 1,87,358 active cases, a medical bulletin said.

 

Chennai accounted for the majority of new coronavirus infections with 7,038 followed by Coimbatore 3,653, Chengalpet 2,250, Kanyakumari 1,248, Thiruvallur 1,016, and Salem 1,009 while the remaining was spread across other districts.

Andhra's Covid positivity rate climbs to 30%

The daily Covid-19 positivity rate in Andhra Pradesh climbed to nearly 30 per cent on Friday Thursday while active cases surged to over 64,000.

 

The state reported 13,212 cases and five deaths during 24-hour period ending on 10 a.m Friday.

 

Visakhapatnam district accounted for three deaths while Chittoor and Nellore reported a death each. The cumulative death toll mounted to 14,532.

 

Authorities conducted 44,516 Covid tests during the 24-hour period. The daily positivity rate jumped to 29.67 per cent from 26.60 per cent the previous day.

48,049 new Covid cases recorded in Karnataka

Continuing to register a surge in cases, Karnataka on Friday logged 48,049 new cases of COVID-19, and 22 fatalities, taking the tally to 34,25,002 and the death toll to 38,537.

 

The state had recorded 47,754 fresh infections on Thursday.

 

Of the new cases today, 29,068 were from Bengaluru Urban that saw 7,196 people being discharged and 6 virus-related deaths.

 

The total number of active cases across the state is now at 323,143.

SC judge recuses himself in Tarun Tejpal plea hearing

WHO European Office releases fact sheet on Omicron Covid variant

A fact sheet addressing "speculation, assumptions and misinformation being communicated about the Omicron Covid-19 variant" was released by the World Health Organization's (WHO) Regional Office for Europe in Copenhagen.

 

According to the WHO, the latest epidemiological data show a rapid rise in Covid-19 infection rates in Europe largely due to the spread of the new variant, reports Xinhua news agency.

 

In September 2021, there were over one million new Covid-19 cases per week. By the first week of January 2022, this number had increased to seven million.

 

The prevalent "myth" that "Omicron only causes mild disease" is one of the most pernicious ones highlighted in the fact sheet.

 

While the document acknowledges that Omicron may appear to cause fewer hospitalizations and be less severe than the Delta variant, it also warns menacingly that "it should not be seen as mild".

 

"The comparatively lower rate of hospitalizations and deaths so far is in large part thanks to vaccination, particularly of vulnerable groups. Without the vaccines many more people would likely be in hospital."

 

Furthermore, it states that vaccines offer "the best available protection" against Omicron.
