Isro said that this 680 Million km long interplanetary voyage begins with the mother of all slingshots, the Trans-Mars Injection.
?Isro's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) spacecraft, which was launched from the Sriharikotta space station on November 5, has been in Earth bound orbits with different apogees since its launch by PSLV.? The slingshot will put it into a heliocentric orbit towards Mars.? ?This will be achieved through a complex combination of navigation and propulsion technologies, governed by the gravity of Sun and Mars, and assisted by the 440 N Liquid engine.
Further fine tuning of the trajectory will be done using the Attitude and Orbit Control Thrusters during the Trajectory Correction manoeuvers planned en route, said Isro officials.
