NTPC Sipat station to power Western India, J&K

The station has been set up with a cost of Rs 13,000 crore

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today dedicated the 2980-Mw Sipat super thermal power station of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh to the nation.

The 2980-Mw station had three units of 660-Mw each built with super critical technology besides two units of 500-Mw each. The station has been set up with a cost of Rs 13,000 crore.

NTPC has for the first time used the super critical technology in the Sipat plant.

“The power produced in the Sipat power station would be supplied to many states of Western India besides Jammu and Kashmir,” Singh said. He also laid the foundation stone for the first phase of 4000-Mw Lara power project to come up in Raigarh district of the state.

In the first phase, two units of 800-Mw each would be set up with an investment of Rs 12,000 crore. The state government would get 50% of the power produced from Lara power station.

“NTPC shares Chhattisgarh’s one-third power capacity and plans to invest Rs 23,000 crore in the state,” Singh said, adding that the proposals for the same had already been designed. The two projects of the NTPC in the state would bring prosperity for the people in both the districts," Singh said.

The Prime Minister said the government had made efforts to enhance power capacity in the country. In the 11th five year plan, the country added a record 55,000-Mw capacity that was double to the capacity added in the 10th plan period. NTPC has shared 9,500-Mw.

Singh said the government had set a target to add new additional capacity of 118,000-Mw in the country.
