A key revenue contributor, freight earnings till Feb this year, grew to Rs 8,438.40 crore, a 26 per cent jump, when compared with Rs 6,708 crore for the same period last year.
"Improved maintenance practices, maximisation of the utility of rolling stock, close monitoring of train movements and operational practices rationalisation helped register the exceptional performance," the SCR said in a release.
With 9.6 million tonnes of freight moving during February, 2015, cumulative freight loading during Apr 2014- Feb 2015 stood at 105.92 mt, as against 96.89 mt carried last year.
Item-wise, coal loading till February stood at 56.12 mt, constituting 53 per cent of the total freight loading. Cement stood at 26 mt, and petroleum, oil and lubricants (POL) at 0.93 mt.
