With an aim to promote cleanliness at rail premises, Railways today appointed Sulabh International founder Bindeshwar Pathak as a brand ambassador for Swachh Rail Mission.

Railways will also form local committees at station level involving station masters, local schools and colleges and other concerned groups to spearhead the sanitation drive at rail premises.

“It is a matter of great pleasure for Indian Railways to felicitate Bindeshwar Pathak as he has strengthened the cleanliness campaign of Indian Railways by accepting this invitation of working on cleanliness initiatives,” Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said after making the announcement.

Prabhu said efforts of the Sulabh International are well known in the field of sanitation and environment.

Hoping that Railways in collaboration with Sulabh International will improve sanitation facilities, he said, “Railways can do wonders if people become aware of cleanliness and sanitation matters.”

Speaking on the occasion, Pathak thanked Prabhu for felicitating him and said Sulabh International is keen to contribute towards sanitation and cleanliness in Indian Railways.

As a pilot project, Sulabh has started cleaning and maintenance of five important railway stations from September. These railway stations are Gorakhpur, Old Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Gwalior.
