Three states from the country’s north-east have burst into the top 10 in the annual education development index with their better access to education and infrastructure.

The annual education index measures the access, infrastructure and the quality of teachers across various states in the country and is calculated by the National University of Educational Planning and Administration based on data available with the District Information of School Education.

According to the data published, Lakshadweep is the best ranked while Jharkand is the worst performer in terms of development of education in the primary and upper primary segments of school education.

Gujarat dropped nine spots to the 18 th  in the index while Manipur jumped 15 spots to the 9 th  position in the index. During 2012-13, as many as 1.5 million schools imparting school education were covered for the study and data received from 662 districts spread over 35 states.

Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal ranked at the bottom of the table while the southern states led by Tamil Nadu figured in the top 10. Not getting access to education is one of the biggest hurdles facing the country.

Himachal Pradesh has one of the best school infrastructure according to the study while Andhra Pradesh was counted amongst the worst in terms of school infrastructure.
