While the Opposition cornered Congress-led UPA a day after DMK pulled out of the Centre, its estranged ally Trinamool Congress today stood by ruling coalition promising support to government's stand on Lankan Tamils issue.

“Our party is deeply concerned about sentiments expressed by the Tamil people. We share their sentiments and are completely with them,” the party tweeted on its official account.

“On matters of external policy, we have, from the beginning, always left it to central government in moments of crisis. We will do the same on this occasion,” it added.

In fact, sources said, TMC MPs have already been informed to support Government's stand regarding resolution on Sri Lanka in the UN Human Rights Council.

“This matter should be seen in isolation. We may be opposed to Congress-run government at Centre, but a responsible political party it should show enough maturity supporting Centre's stand on  matters of external policy,” a senior TMC MP said.

Earlier in the day, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath  spoke to TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee seeking her support on the issue.

Eariler Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram said, India would want  Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council to adopt a “strong” resolution on Sri Lanka.

“We intend to move amendments to the draft resolution on Sri Lanka in the UNHRC. India’s position is that UNHRC should adopt a strong resolution on Sri Lanka,” Chidambaram said.

Howerver, Centre is unlikely to give in to DMK's demand that the terms 'genocide' and 'war crimes' be included in the US-backed resolution.
