As a major initiative to improve the road communication in the rural areas, the Orissa government has decided to upgrade 10,000 kms of rural roads in next three years. This includes roads connecting the block headquarters, tourist destinations, market and mandies and roads considered as important from communication point of view. Out of the 10,000 kms of new roads proposed to be constructed, 6000 kms will be concrete road.
This was decided in a high level meeting chaired by the chief minister Naveen Patnaik. The chief minister has asked the concerned departments to identify those roads and to prepare the detailed project report (DPR) for these projects at the earliest. Besides, 100 bridges are proposed to be constructed every year.
