Adi Godrej, chairman of Godrej Group, one of the most respected and oldest business houses in the country, has announced his decision to support Milind Deora, the Congress candidate from the Mumbai South constituency in the coming Lok Sabha elections.
Though corporate houses generally avoid taking direct stand in politics, Godrej defended his decision, saying Deora is a young, intelligent, well-educated and articulate politician whom people like to see in Parliament.
He also highlighted Deora’s commitment to the people following the 26/11 terror strikes in Mumbai, when he was organising relief and rescue work at the site. Deora was also instrumental in getting many infrastructure schemes sanctioned for Mumbai under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).The industrialist also praised independent candidates like Meera Sanyal, country head of ABN Amro Bank, saying they should join major political parties.
