After Varanasi inland port, UP to speed up work on Noida's Jewar Airport

Yogi has allocated Rs 160 billion proposed Jewar International Airport as an aviation hub for North India

Within days of PM Narendra Modi unveiling inland waterway port in Varanasi as a future cargo hub for Eastern India, UP CM Yogi Adityanath has showcased the proposed Jewar International Airport in Noida as an aviation hub for Northern India.
 

Adityanath reviewed the progress of Jewar Airport on Tuesday. He underlined the airport's utility not only for Western UP pockets, but also for neighbouring states of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Haryana. He said the airport would become a milestone in the path of economic development of UP and connect major tourist and trade hubs of Mathura and Noida.

The airport is estimated to cost nearly Rs 160 billion. Owing to regulatory and clearances hurdles, the project had been hanging fire over the last almost 18 years after being conceived in 2000. It will be developed under the public private partnership (PPP) model. 

According to the techno-economic feasibility report, the airport would comprise two runways and handle 70 million passengers and 3 million tonnes cargo annually after being fully developed. Although the project needs about 5,000 hectares, the airport alone would require more than 1,300 hectares in first phase, to become operational by 2022-23.

The CM has directed officials to expedite preliminary groundwork, including land acquisition and clearances from the Centre, which had already given its in-principle nod. He has set the deadline of December 15 for the concerned departments to forward the proposal to the Centre for final clearance after the getting am approval from the state cabinet.

The land is proposed to be acquired across 6 villages of Jewar tehsil in Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida) district.
