West Bengal government has again written to Centre asking for further extension of digitisation deadline in Kolkata from October 31.

Telecom Regulatory Authority’s guidelines has made it mandatory for cable TV-enabled households across the four metros – Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai — to install set-top boxes for viewing cable television broadcasts by October 31.

“We have written to concerned ministry for extension of deadline. If there is a sudden blackout of television sets across the city , there can be law and order problem,” state urban development minister Firhad Hakim said.

Incidentally, this is the second time state government has written seeking an extension of October deadline. “A letter had been sent by the state on September 29, however no reply has been sent from the Centre,” Hakim said.

Hakim has also denied Central government's claim of digitisation completion figure in Kolkata at 73%.

"I have met multiple system operators (MSOs) here. According to them about 60% households are covered,” he added.
