The Odisha government has set a target to make Bhubaneswar completely Wi-Fi enabled by November 2018 as the state gears up to host the men’s Hockey World Cup-2018.
The sporting event is scheduled to be held from November 28 to December 16, 2018.
According to the decisions taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, fibre optic network would be spread across the city and 1,800 Wi-Fi access points would be set up.
With this, the netizen can access free internet service for a specified period. This will help bridge the digital divide and extend e-governance facilities.
According to a project report prepared for the city Wi-Fi project, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) had made a projection of Rs 126 crore investment through viability gap funding (VGF) in three years for providing over the air connectivity to citizens. Earlier, it was to be implemented by the state electronics & information technology department. However, services will now be implemented under the Smart City project.
Before the preparation of the project report, STPI had created PoC (proof of concept) in about six strategic locations of the city. Leading players like Bharti Infratel, Airtel, Reliance Jio and Ortel had participated in the PoC.
The meeting discussed at length about the implementations of various smart solutions.
The smart solutions will see a spending of Rs 550 crore towards traffic management, electronic parking system, transit operations, emergency response and city incident management system, Wi-Fi, city command and control centre for unified delivery of urban services to citizens.
The state government would shortly launch the Computer Aided Dispatch and Automated Vehicle Location ((CAD/AVL) system where citizens can avail services and information on PCR vans, ambulances, fire tender, water tanker, and timing of transport buses among other things with the help of a mobile application.
