Against the backdrop of its diplomatic offensive against Pakistan, India today put its military might on show with the test-firing of the latest variant of the BrahMos missile at Pokhran in Rajasthan. However, Defence Minister A K Antony said the test was “pre-planned and not directed against any country”.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officials were quoted as saying the Army tested the nuclear-capable missile, which has a 290-km range. BrahMos missile production is a joint collaboration between the DRDO and Russia’s Federal State Unitary Enterprise NPO Mashinostroyenia (NPOM).
The Army has one regiment equipped with the BrahMos missiles, but they are different from the version tested today.
