Shiksha Karmis (contract teachers) working in state on Tuesday resorted to agitation in support of their pending demands that include salary at par with the regular government teachers and merger of the post to the regular cadre.

The agitation of contract teachers started on Tuesday to mark Chhattisgarh’s 11th foundation year. There are around 200,000 contract teachers appointed as Shiksha Karmis are working across the state. The maximum honorarium that they draw amounts to Rs 10,000. They however do not get other facilities like provident fund, family pension etc.

The contract teachers have been agitating in support of their demands for last many years.

The demands include merger of the post to the regular cadre of government teachers, equal salary for equal work at par with the salary drawn by the government teachers and other facilities like pension, medical and allowances.

Sensing the seriousness of the situation, state government Monday evening convened a meeting with the delegation of contract teachers’ association. The meeting continued for more than four hours but ended without any results that propelled the teachers to resort to agitation from Tuesday.
