Facing an acute shortage of migrant labourers in local industry, the Jalandhar Chamber of Industries & Commerce has decided to organise an Employment Fair on Friday, to recruit local labourers for the industries.
“We are facing an acute shortage of migrant labourers and with the non-availability of local labourers, it was extremely difficult to solve the problem. The proposed employment fair will be beneficial for both local labourers and the industry, as it will provide employment to the local youths and the industry will get labourers for the whole year,” Narinder Sehgal, president of the Chamber, said.
It was felt that industry in the state was totally dependent on migrant labourers due to local labourers not being there. Therefore, through the fair, industry will identify potential labourers and even train them to upgrade their skills according to the industrial requirement.
“We have asked for requisitions of labourers by local industries and accordingly the vacancies will be displayed on the board during the employment fair”, Sehgal said, adding that although bulk of the candidates would be recruited on the same day, a data of the remaining unsuccessful candidates would be compiled for future requirement.
The Employment fair, which would be organised at the District Industries Centre at Focal point, would be addressed by the Punjab Cabinet Minister Manoranjan Kalia and Deputy Commissioner, A S Pannu.
Initially the chamber has invited applications under six categories including Security Personnel, Computer Operators, Founderymen, Electricians, Mechanical Engineer apart from other technical persons, who need special training, Charanjit Singh Maingi, general secretary of the Chamber said.
